There has been some rather heated words exchanged in the build-up to Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is the latest to wade in, claiming that Marc-Andre ter Stegen is not yet a world-class goalkeeper.
This follows Lothar Matthaus assertion that the current Bayern Munich side would have to make huge mistakes not to progress past Los Cules.
“Germany is fortunate to have this pair of goalkeepers, although Neuer is truly world-class and Ter Stegen is still on his way to that level,” Rummenigge explained.
Ter Stegen has been sensational for the Blaugrana in the last two seasons, but he finds it difficult to have his performances recognised in his home country because of the presence of Neuer.
Friday will see the pair go up against each other, and if the tie comes down to a penalty shootout, then it will be a direct competition between the two stoppers.
