The Ballon d’Or will not be awarded this year for the first time since it was launched in 1956 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Barcelona star Lionel Messi won a record sixth Ballon d’Or last year, taking him past rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five of the gongs to his name.
The cancellation of the prestigious prize means the Juventus star remains one behind the Argentine.
‘It’s such a strange year that we couldn’t treat it as an ordinary one. Let’s say that we started talking about (making the decision) at least two months ago,’ France Football editor Pascal Ferre said.
Christian Karembeu tipped Karim Benzema as a possible Ballon d’Or contender, lauding the forward’s versatility.
